The Sign of Four(1890)

‘Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants.’

‘The only unofficial consulting detective,’ he answered. ‘I am the last and highest court of appeal in detection.’

‘Detection is, or ought to be, an exact science and should be treated in the same cold and unemotional manner.

‘You have an extraordinary genius for minutiae,’ I remarked.

 ‘I appreciate their importance.

‘It is simplicity itself,’

‘No, no: I never guess. It is a shocking habit – destructive to the logical faculty.

‘I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for?

‘State your case,’

‘I expected to hear you say so.

‘It is of the first importance,’ he cried, ‘not to allow your judgment to be biased by personal qualities.

‘A client is to me a mere unit, a factor in a problem. The emotional qualities are antagonistic to clear reasoning.

‘I assure you that the most winning woman I ever knew was hanged for poisoning three little children for their insurance-money,

‘and the most repellent man of my acquaintance is a philanthropist who has spent nearly a quarter of a million upon the London poor.’

‘My case is, as I have told you, almost complete; but we must not err on the side of overconfidence.’

‘How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?

‘It was a piece of very simple reasoning.’

‘“Wir sind gewohnt, daß die Menschen verhöhnen was sie nicht verstehen.”Goethe is always pithy.’

‘It has, however, prevented the case from becoming the pretty little intellectual problem which it at one time promised to be.’

‘I have no wish to make a mystery of him to you, anyway. But you must have formed your own opinion. Now, do consider the data.

‘Women are never to be entirely trusted – not the best of them.’

‘This infernal problem is consuming me. It is too much to be balked by so petty an obstacle, when all else had been overcome.’

‘One of our greatest statesmen has said that a change of work is the best rest. So it is.’

‘That is usually a product of higher education.’

‘It is just these very simple things which are extremely liable to be overlooked.’

‘Winwood Reade is good upon the subject,’ said Holmes. ‘He remarks that, while the individual man is an insoluble puzzle, in the aggregate he becomes a mathematical certainty.’

‘And there is the Aurora,’ exclaimed Holmes, ‘and going like the devil! Full speed ahead, engineer. Make after that launch with the yellow light. By heaven, I shall never forgive myself if she proves to have the heels of us!’

‘We must catch her!’ cried Holmes between his teeth. ‘Heap it on, stokers! Make her do all she can! If we burn the boat we must have them!’

‘All is well that ends well,’

‘But love is an emotional thing, and whatever is emotional is opposed to that true cold reason which I place above all things.’
