The Valley of Fear(1914)

‘A touch! A distinct touch!’ cried Holmes. ‘You are developing a certain unexpected vein of pawky humour, Watson, against which I must learn to guard myself.’

‘No less! When any of that party talk about “He” you know whom they mean. There is one predominant “He” for all of them.’

‘Let us consider the problem in the light of pure reason.’

‘Brilliant, Watson. You are scintillating this morning.’

‘Excellent, Watson! I am very much mistaken if you have not touched the spot.’

‘We pay the price, Watson, for being too up-to-date!’ he cried. ‘We are before our time, and suffer the usual penalties.’

‘Because I always keep faith.’

‘All knowledge comes useful to the detective,’

‘Mr. Mac, the most practical thing that you ever did in your life would be to shut yourself up for three months and read twelve hours a day at the annals of crime.’

‘The temptation to form premature theories upon insufficient data is the bane of our profession.’

‘Remarkable!’ he said, when the story was unfolded, ‘most remarkable! I can hardly recall any case where the features have been more peculiar.’

‘I claim the right to work in my own way and give my results at my own time – complete rather than in stages.’

‘A lie, Watson – a great, big, thumping, obtrusive, uncompromising lie – that’s what meets us on the threshold! There is our starting point.’

‘It is, I admit, mere imagination; but how often is imagination the mother of truth?’

‘I’m a believer in the genius loci. You smile, Friend Watson. Well, we shall see.’

‘Is it not? Is it not? Breadth of view, my dear Mr. Mac, is one of the essentials of our profession. The interplay of ideas and the oblique uses of knowledge are often of extraordinary interest.’

‘Watson insists that I am the dramatist in real life,’ said he. ‘Some touch of the artist wells up within me, and calls insistently for a well staged performance.’

‘Surely our profession, Mr. Mac, would be a drab and sordid one if we did not sometimes set the scene so as to glorify our results. The blunt accusation, the brutal tap upon the shoulder – what can one make of such a dénouement? But the quick inference, the subtle trap, the clever forecast of coming events, the triumphant vindication of bold theories – are these not the pride and the justification of our life’s work?’

‘If criminals would always schedule their movements like railway trains, it would certainly be more convenient for all of us.’

‘A great brain and a huge organization have been turned to the extinction of one man.’

‘I don’t say that he can’t be beat. But you must give me time – you must give me time!’
