The Empty House

‘My dear Watson,’ said the well-remembered voice, ‘I owe you a thousand apologies. I had no idea that you would be so affected.’

‘if I may ask for your cooperation, a hard and dangerous night’s work in front of us. Perhaps it would be better if I gave you an account of the whole situation when that work is finished.’

‘Well, then, about that chasm. I had no serious difficulty in getting out of it, for the very simple reason that I never was in it. '

‘I have some knowledge, however, of baritsu, or the Japanese system of wrestling, which has more than once been very useful to me.’

‘So rapidly does the brain act’

‘Work is the best antidote to sorrow, my dear Watson,

‘There are some trees, Watson, which grow to a certain height, and then suddenly develop some unsightly eccentricity.

‘and once again Mr. Sherlock Holmes is free to devote his life to examining those interesting little problems which the complex life of London so plentifully presents.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes
The Norwood Builder

‘From the point of view of the criminal expert,’said Mr. Sherlock Holmes, ‘London has become a singularly uninteresting city since the death of the late lamented Professor Moriarty.’

‘You mentioned your name, as if I should recognize it, but I assure you that, beyond the obvious facts that you are a bachelor, a solicitor, a Freemason, and an asthmatic, I know nothing whatever about you.’

‘Arrest you!’ said Holmes. ‘This is really most grati–most interesting.’

‘Was the blind down?’

‘A scientific expert would pronounce at once that this was drawn up on a suburban line,’

‘It strikes me, my good Lestrade, as being just a trifle too obvious,’ said Holmes. ‘You do not add imagination to your other great qualities,’

‘Because we have in this case one singular incident coming close to the heels of another singular incident.

‘All my instincts are one way, and all the facts are the other,’

‘I know it’s all wrong. I feel it in my bones. There is something that has not come out, and that housekeeper knows it.’

‘At present I cannot spare energy and nerve force for digestion.

‘And how deceptive appearances may be, to be sure! Such a nice young man to look at! It is a lesson to us not to trust our own judgment, is it not, Lestrade?’

‘I assure you, my good Lestrade, that I have an excellent reason for everything that I do. You may possibly remember that you chaffed me a little, some hours ago,’

‘Lestrade, allow me to present you with your principal missing witness, Mr. Jonas Oldacre.’

‘The work is its own reward.’

‘I pay a good deal of attention to matters of detail,’

‘But he had not that supreme gift of the artist, the knowledge of when to stop.’

‘If ever you write an account, Watson, you can make rabbits serve your turn.’

The Dancing Men

‘So, Watson,’ said he, suddenly, ‘you do not propose to invest in South African securities?’

‘Because in five minutes you will say that it is all so absurdly simple.’

‘Every problem becomes very childish when once it is explained to you. Here is an unexplained one. See what you can make of that, friend Watson.’

‘We have let this affair go far enough,’

‘I commend that fact very carefully to your attention,’

‘Because I looked for it.’

‘That is the problem which we are now about to solve,’

‘and this investigation draws rapidly to a close.’

‘What one man can invent another can discover,’

The Return of Sherlock Holmes
The Solitary Cyclist

‘At least it cannot be your health, ’said he, as his keen eyes darted over her; ‘so ardent a bicyclist must be full of energy. ’

‘which the typewriter does not generate. This lady is a musician.’

‘Odd, Watson – very odd!’

‘Gone to the nearest public-house. That is the centre of country gossip.’

‘I get so little active exercise that it is always a treat,’ said he. ‘You are aware that I have some proficiency in the good old British sport of boxing. Occasionally, it is of service; to-day, for example, I should have come to very ignominious grief without it.’

‘My name is Sherlock Holmes.’

‘I have been very obtuse, Watson,’

‘You have been very remiss in not coming to me sooner,’

‘So that three days have been wasted. The affair has been most deplorably handled.’

‘This case grows upon me, Watson,’ said he. ‘There are decidedly some points of interest in connection with it.’

‘I will call you early tomorrow morning, and you and I will try if we can throw some little light upon the mystery.’

‘My reasoning seems to have been pretty sound, Watson.’

‘Admirable!’ he said. ‘A most illuminating remark. It is impossible as I state it, and therefore I must in some respect have stated it wrong. Yet you saw for yourself. Can you suggest any fallacy?’

‘What a blind beetle I have been, not to draw my conclusion.’

‘I accuse you,’ said he. ‘And now, your Grace, I’ll trouble you for that check.’

‘I am not in an official position, and there is no reason, so long as the ends of justice are served, why I should disclose all that I know.’

‘I am a poor man,’

‘and I have satisfied myself that by no exertion of my strength can I transfix the pig with a single blow.’

‘My good Hopkins, I have investigated many crimes, but I have never yet seen one which was committed by a flying creature.’

‘For all that, its presence has some significance,’

‘Well, well, I can do nothing more. Let us walk in these beautiful woods, Watson, and give a few hours to the birds and the flowers.’

‘One should always look for a possible alternative, and provide against it. It is the first rule of criminal investigation.’

‘It seems to me to have only one drawback, Hopkins, and that is that it is intrinsically impossible.’

‘We all learn by experience, and your lesson this time is that you should never lose sight of the alternative.’

The Return of Sherlock Holmes
Charles Augustus Milverton

‘I have said that he is the worst man in London, and I would ask you how could one compare the ruffian, who in hot blood bludgeons his mate, with this man, who methodically and at his leisure tortures the soul and wrings the nerves in order to add to his already swollen money-bags?’

‘You would not call me a marrying man, Watson?’

‘However, I rejoice to say that I have a hated rival, who will certainly cut me out the instant that my back is turned. What a splendid night it is!’

‘Watson, I mean to burgle Milverton’s house tonight.’

‘Exactly. Since it is morally justifiable, I have only to consider the question of personal risk. Surely a gentleman should not lay much stress upon this, when a lady is in most desperate need of his help?’

‘We have shared this same room for some years, and it would be amusing if we ended by sharing the same cell. You know, Watson, I don’t mind confessing to you that I have always had an idea that I would have made a highly efficient criminal. This is the chance of my lifetime in that direction.’

‘I considered him one of the most dangerous men in London, and that I think there are certain crimes which the law cannot touch, and which therefore, to some extent, justify private revenge.’

‘Then tell me about it.’

‘The affair seems absurdly trifling, and yet I dare call nothing trivial when I reflect that some of my most classic cases have had the least promising commencement.’

‘We have a long way to go yet,’ said he. ‘And yet – and yet – well, we have some suggestive facts to act upon.’

‘To remember it – to docket it. We may come on something later which will bear upon it.’
