A Study in Scarlet(1887)

‘I’ve found it! I’ve found it.’

‘You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive.’

‘You appear to be astonished,’ he said, smiling at my expression of surprise. ‘Now that I do know it I shall do my best to forget it.’

‘You say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work.’

‘From a drop of water,’ said the writer, ‘a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of one or the other.’

‘Well, I have a trade of my own. I suppose I am the only one in the world. I’m a consulting detective, if you can understand what that is.’

‘Observation with me is second nature.’

‘Commonplace,’

‘No data yet,’ he answered. ‘It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence. It biases the judgment.’

‘There is nothing new under the sun. It has all been done before.’

‘They say that genius is an infinite capacity for taking pains,’ he remarked with a smile. ‘It’s a very bad definition, but it does apply to detective work.’

‘You know a conjurer gets no credit when once he has explained his trick.’

‘That head of yours should be for use as well as ornament.’

‘Where there is no imagination there is no horror.’

(A fool always finds a bigger fool to admire him.)

‘It is a mistake to confound strangeness with mystery. The most commonplace crime is often the most mysterious.’

‘What you do in this world is a matter of no consequence,’ returned my companion, bitterly. ‘The question is, what can you make people believe that you have done? Never mind.’
